One last thing that really touched me was how he shared the time that God asked him to do something. It was formed as a question. Since I have experienced the same as I am sure others have it really hit the mark with me. I'm not sure I personally would use this book as a devotional but I can see how it could be. Feb 04, Cheryl rated it really liked it. A journey it is. This book is not a step-by-step list of things to do nor is this book a deep theological work, but a journey of sorts.

Not traveling from one place to another, but more about who you are traveling with, in this case, God. I found this book to be a very enjoyable read. Glimpses of his real humanity shone through. I appreciate his honesty. This much authenticity is rare to find and this case, funny, too. Given the importance and gravity of the topic he balanced it well with stories and more than a dollop of pleasant humor. While reading, at some points, worship songs came to my mind.

I think he must have been truly drawing me into His company. Overall I found this book to be extremely encouraging and not the least bit condemning nor judgmental. So each chapter felt like a gentle loving nudge from the Holy Spirit towards the Father.

The opinions I have expressed are my own. I absolutely loved this book.

I feel this book helped me draw closer to my Father after realizing more how He wants us to spend time with Him; quiet, uninterrupted time with Him. My mind cannot wrap around the King of the Universe wanting a relationship with me. It gives God pleasure to spend time with His children. Any father should desire to spend time with their children and God is no different.

There are 30 chapters with a wonderful prayer at the end of each. The prayers are taken from Scripture. Many of the chapters strongly spoke to me and it was exactly what I needed at the time. I love when that happens! Sheets brought many of them to life. I especially loved the word studies he included. It helped make sense of many of the verses and stories taken from the Bible. Chapter 20, The Lingerers, was my favorite and it stirred something in me. The author mentions allowing only certain people into his heart.

God is like that too. God will allow many in His presence but more selective with His heart. Sheets writes with humor, shares life lessons and tells Bible stories in way you can relate to your life. Many of the chapters have changed my life, if not the entire book. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for my review.

The Pleasure of His Company was a very good book. Sheets made some very good points in quick, easy-to-read chapters. Nearly every point was backed up with a personal life experience as well as a passage from the Bible. Sheets discussed the point he made in humorous conversational writing. Many of the points that were made were out of the ordinary and not something I might have though Overview: Many of the points that were made were out of the ordinary and not something I might have thought of on my own.

I found the discussion to be sound, in the biblical sense, as far as I understand it. The chapters all followed the same rough pattern, making the option to study the book, rather than just read it, appealing. The writing is conversational and pleasant as well.

Dutch Sheets: How to Enjoy The Pleasure of His Company and Friendship with God

Each chapter covered different topics that encouraged more thought and depth, I would say the book was age appropriate for young adults and above. Chapter topics covered many different situations, showing how it's possible for anyone to come to Christ, no matter what their life is like. Due to time pressure, I had to read the book and was unable to stop and study. Also because of the layout, I saw too much of a routine.

It was almost always the same order of information per each chapter life story, bible story, discussion , but again, I think this is just a studying thing. So all in all, I liked the book, just take note that it's more like a devotional or a book to just be read slowly. Feb 02, Caroline rated it really liked it Shelves: With 30 shorter chapters of about pages each , this book can be used as a month-long devotional, or just a regular non-fiction read.

Hart rated it really liked it Shelves: Dutch Sheets invites us to cultivate a deeper, more intimate relationship with God. In our everyday life we meet strangers, encounter friends and acquaintances, create new relationships, or even fall in love. And we realize that there are certain things expected to transpire. Perhaps we learn their names, what they like and dislike, etc… Well, this book does just that.

It reveals our God, the essence Dutch Sheets invites us to cultivate a deeper, more intimate relationship with God. It reveals our God, the essence of who He is, what He desires, and how growing closer to Him will bless our lives. My favorite feature of this book is its inviting conversational tone. But this book needs to be savored. Each of the 30 chapters begins with a simple phrase describing different aspects of our walk with God.

Though the chapters are succinct, they each deliver mind-stimulating, heart-penetrating messages using Bible stories to illustrate their truths. It also closes each section with an associative prayer and supportive verses for further reading or study. Used as a daily devotional, or to read through in one sitting, this book serves as an encouraging friend, and as the back cover states, shows us ways to enjoy God more. Apr 06, Veronica rated it it was amazing Shelves: I really enjoyed this book and felt it had a lot of great information. I loved how it was pointed out that God desires to have a personal relationship with you and that He pursues you and rejoices over you!

He talks about how we have to make spending time with God a priority, no matter how busy we are. Only we can make that decision and we have to remember that that's the most important thing, not doing good works or being busy for the Lord. I really enjoyed the many word studies and how a verse I really enjoyed this book and felt it had a lot of great information. I really enjoyed the many word studies and how a verse's meaning would become incredibly clear after you see the deeper meaning in which Hebrew or Greek word was used.

Most Christians, unfortunately, have no true intimacy with God, spend very little time with Him, and have a very limited knowledge of His heart and ways. We mustn't cheapen friendship by lowering the standard. I want to quickly point out, however, that friendship with God is possible for every Believer and is His desire for us.

After Adam's fall, Abrahams walk with God was the first and probably the most in-depth revelation of this type of relationship. Three times in Scripture God called him His friend—and it's what He desires with each one of us. This is not only a part of our destiny, it's part of God's dream. In exposing our shallow understanding of friendship with God and the fact that so few experience it, I don't mean to impugn our intentions and motives.

The fact is, we're much like Abraham was at the beginning of his journey with the Lord. Most of us begin our walk with God just as he did—wanting the benefits He offers. We aren't terribly interested in His dreams; we probably aren't even consciously aware that He has any. But we are aware that He can help us with our dreams, the basis of our needs, and remind Him that He is our Father—our source. We are all so incredibly human. We see God as Provider.

Do we really know Him as friend? No, not at the beginning of our journey. God understands this, however, and in His love and humility is willing to meet us where we are. His love embraces us and makes us His child. And just as a natural child doesn't begin its relationship on a friendship level with Mom and Dad, our heavenly Father knows we won't with Him, either. Most of us, when younger and in our parents' home, trusted them to provide for us. But for most of us the day arrived when we wanted to be more than just a well-cared-for child.

I know I did—I wanted to be my parents' friend. At that point I cared more about their happiness, well-being, and dreams than I did their money. I wanted to give to them more than I wanted to take from them. We no longer talked only about my happiness; we discussed things that interested them, as well.

Over the years their faith had been transferred to me, and we dreamed together about making a difference for God. Our relationship had matured into a friendship. The same was true of Abraham. He started his journey with God looking for lands, blessings, and greatness.

The Pleasure of His Company | Baker Publishing Group

He embraced the promise of a biological son through whom he would produce a great nation. When God didn't provide the son He promised Abraham and Sarah in the way they expected, they demonstrated their lack of trust by choosing to have a son through Hagar, Sarah's maid. There were some rough spots along the way, but thankfully, the relationship grew.

Still, though Abraham demonstrated humanness, in the end he proved his trust in God had grown to a level few people ever attain. He was even willing to sacrifice Isaac, his long-awaited son, believing if he did so, God would raise Isaac from the dead. The Lord so cherished His friendship with Abraham that, when Abraham died, He saw to it Abraham was buried at Hebron, which actually means "friendship. Upon Abraham's arrival in Heaven, I like to think perhaps Jehovah stood, got everyone's attention, and honored the old patriarch: We dreamed together, and enjoyed the pleasure of one another's company.

When God is looking for someone in His family He can be vulnerable with, a friend with whom He can share His hopes, dreams, and, yes, even His disappointments, I hope He feels He can look to me. And when my life is over and my body laid to rest, if it can be said that He and I were friends, I will have been a success.

Won't you make this your life goal as well? Father God truly longs for your friendship. He wants to make some memories with you. Respond today and begin enjoying the pleasure of one another's company. Your Father will become your very best friend.
